Workshop “Joining” and “Process Costing Tool”

Workshop “Joining”

Time and Venue

Thursday, January 22nd, 2015
9:00h – 13:00h

Fraunhofer IPT, “Hörsaal”
Steinbachstr. 17, 52074 Aachen

Short description of the workshop

Initial situation

Joining technology is one of the key enablers for the large scale use of FRP. Due to the material-specific properties of fiber-reinforced plastics, joining is a major challenge. Joining technologies currently used have different disadvantages due to their process characteristic. A consequence is the suboptimal utilization of the potential of fiber-reinforced plastics. At this point there is still great potential for the improvement and development of joining processes.

Scope of the workshop

One aim of this workshop is to show state-of-the-art joining processes for fiber-reinforced plastics and multi-material-joints and to give an insight to current research activities related to this topic. Furthermore, the major aim of this workshop is to discuss about the necessary future development of joining processes concerning to their structural and material-specific performance and to improve the integration into the entire production chain.

Structure of the workshop

  • Key presentations of industry representatives to give a practical insight into different joining technologies for FRP
  • Presentation of current research activities of AZL partner institutes to show new approaches for joining FRP or FRP-Metal
  • Discussion of the state-of-the-art processes and new approaches for joining FRP, conclusion of industrial demand and possible research projects

Workshop “Process Costing Tool”

Time and Venue

Thursday, January 22nd, 2015
13:30h – 17:00h

Fraunhofer IPT, “Hörsaal”

Short description of the workshop

Initial situation

As identified in the AZL Market and Technology Study, the high cost of composite parts prevents the market penetration in various branches. Mainly the material cost and the labor cost are dominating. For complex parts, which are produced in various process steps, the cost structure depends on different factors in the process chains, which are not easily identified.

Scope of the workshop

The workshop aims to model and to analyze process chains regarding the cost structure of composite parts. By this analysis, the bottlenecks of the process chain are identified and technical solutions can be derived with a cost saving potential. To facilitate the identification of cost dominant factors, the AZL will present a software for the industry to model process chains and to calculate product costs. You are invited to give feedback to the actual status quo of the software and your specific interests.

Structure of the workshop

  • Key speakers of the industry will present successful composite products in markets and will speak about the cost structure.
  • The AZL will present the actual status quo of the developed software for the cost structure analysis of process chains and products.
  • The workshop will have an interactive character, in which the participants have the opportunity to work with the actual software. We invite you to discuss this software product and the opportunities/needs in your specific business environment.
