New lightweight resin solution for creating complex honeycomb panels | NewsLIGHT #15 | Huntsman

RIMLINE® HC+ resin technology is a new, two-component, polyurethane resin system for spray application to fiberglass reinforced honeycomb panels. Developed by automotive material experts at Huntsman, the latest addition to the RIMLINE® range of resins can enable new design possibilities and deliver significant production efficiencies in the manufacture of automotive interior components including parcel shelves and load bearing trunk floors.

Sprayed on to paper honeycomb that has been covered with a glass fiber mat, RIMLINE® HC+ resin technology can be used to create a lightweight composite material, which offers high strength and rigidity, and is robust and long lasting. Meeting industry needs for VOC and odor specifications, RIMLINE® HC+ resins can help bring complex designs to life – delivering panels with intricate mold details and superior edge finishing, that can be easily integrated with fixings and fastenings.

Crucially, the use of RIMLINE® HC+ resins can also boost plant productivity. Developed after discussions with customers, this new line of resins has a longer spray window of up to 100 seconds – enabling part producers to spray bigger panels or use the resin in projects where multi-cavity tools are used. Conscious that part producers need to free up their presses quickly and efficiently, RIMLINE® HC+ resins cure quickly. For relatively simple parts, the resin will cure in just 35 seconds. For more complex components, curing will be complete in around 60 seconds.

RIMLINE® HC+ resins also deliver excellent release results. A high number of parts can be produced, without needing to reapply external release agents and without the need for tool cleaning. This means panel producers can achieve better run rates. Last but not least, RIMLINE® HC+ resins can help reduce waste. The technology is thixotropic enough to eliminate drips when a panel is sprayed on one side and subsequently flipped over – meaning less product is wasted and less time is required cleaning up the work area.
