Join the soon-starting joint partner project initiatives: Follow Up Projects on Multi-material Battery Casings and Bio-Based Composite Door

As introduced in this year’s AZL Annual Partner Meeting, 3 of the proposed project ideas are planned to start in 2022. The project scope and work packages of each project were specified and defined in the last months.

Project 1: Application relevant test method and investigation of relative safety performance of different material options for bottom impact protection of battery casings

By developing a test frame for oblique testing, several materials will be tested and evaluated in regards to the safety level and suitability for bottom impact protection. Additionally, a transfer function between oblique and normal testing will be defined and verified via testing, allowing to test more materials. Finally, weight and cost ratios of protection plates will be analysed. Participants of the project have a comparison of different materials and their performance at the end.

Project 2: Fire Protection – Applications relevant fire test procedure for composites

Starting with an overview of existing test methods and an evaluation of these, the realization and design of a test device which allows to investigate heat exposure and mechanical behaviour of different materials is planned. Subsequently, numerous materials and protection layers are tested and further evaluated in CAE simulations including thermal simulations. At the end, weight and cost indications of possible complete solutions will be analysed. As the outcome participants have an overview of which amount of different materials (including their own material) is needed and the relative performance of them.

Project 3: Bio-Based Composite Door

Similar to the concept study of a multi-material battery casing project, in this project a concept for an automotive door manufacture with bio-based composite materials will be developed. The main activities, besides the concept phase and identification of material systems, include testing of material combinations (fully bio-based, conventional composites and both combined) on Coupon Level, manufacture demo parts with existing AZL machines and conduct ecological and economical benchmarks. With this approach, participants receive a better understanding of the feasibility of bio-based materials in a structural part.
