Composites in Buildings and Infrastructure
Composites become increasingly important in Buildings & Infrastructure (B&I) applications. Advantages such as lightweight and corrosion resistance offer enormous and growing potential for lightweight materials and related technologies for new construction, but also for rehabilitation and renovation of existing Buildings & Infrastructure components.
The AZL Partner Network which consists of more than 80 international companies and 9 research institutes at the RWTH Aachen Campus therefore initiated a Joint Market and Technology Study, which identified new potentials for composites in buildings and infrastructure markets. This initiative will now turn into a long-term cooperation in form of an AZL industrial workgroup.
The new workgroup “Composites in Buildings and Infrastructure” will be kicked-off on January 25th, 2018 and meets on a six-month basis. The workgroup continues the collaboration on composites in buildings and infrastructure after the completion of an initial market and technology study, which identified new potentials for composite technologies in buildings and infrastructure markets. Besindes industrial keynotes, the participants will discuss the roadmap for the workgroup addressing the following topics
- Process and Manufacturing Technologies
- Fire Safety Regulations
- Materials
- Standards and Norms
The meeting is open to interested companies from the composite industry as well as from the building and infrastructure markets.

The Joint Market and Technology Study “New Potentials for Composite Technologies in Buildings & Infrastructure” was completed by end of September 2017 by a consortium of more than 25 companies together with AZL and broadened the knowledge on business opportunities for composite technologies in these two growing markets. In two prioritization workshops, AZL together with the study partners determined 20 key segments as well as 438 applications with high market potential. 11 of these were investigated in detail including business cases.

At JEC World 2018, the leading European composite exhibition, AZL and JEC Group will organize a conference on “Building & Infrastructures: The high-potential market for composites”. The conference will be held on March 6th, 2018 and will end with a guided tour to selected companies at the exhibition involved in B&I applications.
