Last week we had an inspiring 4th AZL Annual Partner Meeting with 130 representatives of our more than 80 international Partner Companies and 9 Partner Institutes. We summarized some impressions.

Within the next months, we will kick-off several new Joint Partner Projects and Studies (read more below) as well as our new concept for co-locating development activities on the RWTH Aachen Campus including offices at the recently opened Production Engineering Cluster at the RWTH Aachen Campus.

AZL Annual Partner Meeting 2017 brings together 130 Representatives of Partner Network

Last week, we met in Aachen for our 4th Annual Partner Meeting. We provided updates on previous AZL activities and discussed future topics and identify trends for the lightweight industry. More… 

Joint Market and Technology Study on High-Performance SMC open for AZL and non-AZL Partner Companies to join (Start: July 2017)

AZL together with IKV will start a study to provide in-depth knowledge on SMC applications and technologies, key challenges and technological solutions for establishing High-Performance SMC. First partners already joined in order to jointly analyze use cases and value chains for structural and semi-structural as well as Class A components in E/E, rail, aircraft, naval and automotive applications to identify key challenges and fields of action for development to establish HP-SMC. The study was initiated and sharpened by the AZL Workgroup on High-Performance SMC and is open to all companies outside and inside the AZL Partner Network. Business Platforms on Lightweight Technology

Study identifying standards for FRP pipes and vessels will soon start for AZL Partner Companies (Start: July 2017)

Together with Fraunhofer IPT, we will provide a pre-competitive project initiative to assess standards for the development and qualification of fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) pipes and vessels. The study for AZL Partner Companies will include investigations and analyses of relevant applications for FRP pipes and vessels. A detailed overview on requirements, existing standards (material and product related) as well as test and measurement methods for materials, pipes and vessels qualification will be given. New Potentials for Composite Technologies in Buildings & Infrastructure (open to join)

Within the last months, 20 market segments including 438 potential composite applications and components have been identified within the Joint Market and Technology Study involving 25 companies inside and outside the AZL Partner Network. 25 components were selected for a detailed analysis based on market- and technology-driven criteria. At the 2nd report meeting (July 5th), participants will select 10 components which will be elaborated in detailed business cases. The study investigates drivers and drawbacks for components, materials and production technologies to identify new business opportunities in the markets of building & infrastructure. KraussMaffei Technologies GmbH installs injection molding system at AZL for research project “OPTO-Light“

The 200 tons turning plate system CXW 200/380/180 will be the basis for a new three-step process for the production of fiber-reinforced thermoset-thermoplastic hybrids for high-volume structural applications. The photonics-assisted process chain will be presented during the public project closing event at the AZL machinery hall in Aachen on September 27, 2017. OPTO-Light is a BMBF funded project of AZL of RWTH and the companies BMW AG, KraussMaffei Technologies GmbH, ARGES GmbH, Precitec GmbH & Co. KG, Sensortherm GmbH and Zeiss Optotechnik GmbH (Funding code: 13N12696).

Brightlands Rolduc Polymer Conference

On September 10-13, 2017, the Brightlands Rolduc Polymer Conference will be held in Rolduc Abbey in the south of the Netherlands. AZL researcher Stefan Schmitt will present latest research results for the production of hybrid thermoset/ thermoplastic composites by photonic-enabled intrinsic joining based on injection molding.

Laser in Composites Symposium at Fraunhofer ILT

Fraunhofer ILT in collaboration with the AZL will present latest developments and state of the art applications in laser processing of composite materials. On September 20th and 21st the Aachen Body Engineering Days will take place at the Institute for Automotive Engineering (ika) of RWTH Aachen University.
